This week, amongst other things, I've been taking a read of Shefali's Substack blog, The Enchanted Forest. I would absolutely recommend a read because, as always, she makes some excellent points, addresses some things that we're all thinking and asks some relevant questions.
We're going to feature some of her articles over the coming weeks, and we're starting with Modern Narratives and Getting Back to Talking about the Work.
In this blog, Shefali considers how media, social media, technology and business models can complicate so many things and prevent us thinking clearly and creatively.
She argues that, as a writer, all you really want is for people to read your writing and that we just need to read the work and talk about stories we like.
In this vein, Shefali talks about 'ditching the how to and just doing'. It's incredible what we can achieve if we uncomplicate things and start.
With that in mind, Shefali talks about how we have finally managed to launch our writing competition, Detritus, a long term dream.
If you know anyone who writes what we publish, which is horror, YA and philosophy and may have struggled with the publishing part, do pass it on and encourage them to enter the competition. We rarely accept new submissions due to the size of the company but we are gearing up to do a lot of reading before the end of the year! We'd love to hear from you!
